Magnesium

It is important for enzymatic reactions using ATP as a substrate and for the binding of macromolecules to subcellular organelles. It also has a direct depressant effect on skeletal muscle, decreases the excitability threshold of the central nervous system and has negative dromotropic and batmotropic actions.

Its RDA ranges from 150 to 300 mg/day in children and 300 to 350 mg/day in adults. It may cause hypermagnesaemia, with symptoms characterised by muscle weakness, hypotension, ECG changes, sedation, mental confusion and hypoxia.

The most important natural sources are: fresh fruit especially citrus fruits, fresh vegetables.

The main plant drugs rich in this mineral are: artichoke, chestnut, blackcurrant, rose hip.
