Gastric hyperacidity: let's get to know it better

iperacidita

Have you ever experienced a burning sensation rising from your stomach to your throat?

If so, you have probably experienced one of the symptoms of gastric hyperacidity.

This phenomenon, related to the excessive production of stomach acid, can underlie a common disorder such as gastroesophageal reflux.

If it is any consolation, you are not the only person who suffers from it: in fact, hyperacidity is one of the most common disorders worldwide.

This condition occurs associated with a burning sensation in the stomach and pain, localized in the upper torso.

It can be both occasional and frequent, and that sufferers are forced to forego many social occasions such as lunches and/or dinners with friends; it can often adversely affect the quality of sleep.

What are the factors that predispose to hyperacidity?

Even when associated with gastroesophageal reflux, gastric hyperacidity can be caused by poor eating habits, such as eating meals that are too large and high in fat, fried and/or spicy foods, sausages, coffee, chocolate, carbonated beverages, and the abuse of alcoholic beverages.

What can help improve hyperacidity and the associated burning sensation?

  • correct your eating habits, preferring to eat small, frequent meals throughout the day, and avoiding excessive portions in the evening; make room for steamed vegetables, white meat cooked on the plate, low-fat yogurt, fruits low in citric acid (so for example, apples, pears, berries) or soups prepared without the use of fats or oils, preferring vegetable ones if possible;
  • facilitate digestion by drinking 1-2 glasses of water with meals;
  • avoid lying down immediately after meals: raising the headboard by 15-20 cm may also be helpful;
  • control body weight, such as by engaging in sports activities;
  • adapt clothing by avoiding tight clothing and/or belts at the waist;
  • absolutely avoid smoking.
