The season of chestnuts.. and hair

stagione delle castagne e del capello

Hair loss is a physiological process, and on average one loses between 50 and 100 hairs per day. It may happen that during the changing seasons (especially in autumn) this process intensifies, with up to 200 hairs lost per day.
The reason why this phenomenon intensifies during the change of seasons is related to the fact that in autumn and spring many of our hairs are in the telogen phase, i.e. the phase of the hair's life cycle in which functional activities end, causing the hair to fall out when it is washed and combed.

Other factors influencing hair loss during seasonal changes are related to:

  • Prolonged exposure to the sun reduces levels of melatonin, the hormone involved in the sleep/wake cycle but also in hair and hair synthesis;
  • to stress;
  • to hormonal imbalances;

There are natural remedies that help limit hair loss at the change of season such as:

  • scalp massage: which is able to stimulate pressure and improve scalp circulation, resulting in better looking hair;
  • do not keep your hair tied up all the time and use a brush that does not break the hair (e.g. brushes with natural or boar hair bristles);
  • nutrition and supplementation: a healthy diet that ensures a proper supply of nutrients is the first step in dealing with hair loss during these periods. Specific supplements for hair wellbeing (based on zinc and B vitamins) can be helpful in coping with seasonal changes.
